COMPTON, UK -

A new toolkit supporting frontline NHS staff to introduce innovative approaches to service delivery has been launched by Baxter Healthcare Ltd. The toolkit, developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals in Greater Manchester, brings together a range of tools and resources in an accessible guide. It will help those considering new approaches, such as expanding self-management of care to move it out of hospital and closer to home, find the most effective routes to delivering change.

Insights on the barriers NHS staff face when trying to drive innovation to move care out of hospital were provided at a workshop with nurses, clinicians and NHS leaders in Manchester in July 2018. The workshop, chaired by the former Chief Nurse of NHS Digital Anne Cooper, highlighted that despite the recognised need to transform services, there are still considerable challenges in making innovation a reality.

Working innovatively: A toolkit to support the use of innovative technology in practice was developed to help address this need. The publication of the toolkit coincides with the launch of Baxter Education Centre North which provides patients with the training and expertise they need to have their therapy at home.

The toolkit outlines the benefits of innovative technologies in moving care closer to home and provides a simple step-by-step guide for those wishing to take a lead in transformation. It includes guidance on making the case for change; embedding change; and monitoring and scaling innovation signposting to a wealth of resources including from NHS Improvement, educational institutions, NESTA and NHS Digital.

Anne Cooper, chair of the innovation workshop and former Chief Nurse at NHS Digital said: "Our hospitals are under growing pressure, so we need to take new approaches. There is so much opportunity to use innovative technology to shift care into the community and people's homes. But staff across the NHS need tools to help them, and this new toolkit is a welcome contribution. It’s exciting to think about what the future holds."

Andy Goldney, General Manager Baxter UK, Ireland and Nordic said: "Hearing directly from healthcare professionals across Manchester showed us the importance of supporting staff to drive change. We hope this toolkit inspires and helps anyone in the NHS who wants find new ways to innovate and move care closer to home."
