Patient safety is at the forefront of everything Baxter does. The company works in partnership with healthcare providers and policy makers to develop and support patient safety initiatives.
Baxter supports the NHS in advancing patient safety by continuously innovating in the development of treatments and the delivery of care for people with critical conditions. The company’s innovations in medical devices, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology all help reduce the risk of adverse incidents occurring in the delivery of patient care.
Patient safety and improved patient care are themes that run through all of Baxter’s businesses. By listening to the concerns of patients and professionals about safety in healthcare, Baxter has and continues to respond with innovative treatments and products that are dependable and easy to use. The company is constantly investing in new products and technology, as shown by the impressive number of innovative firsts in medication delivery, renal therapy, and haemophilia care including:
- Baxter was the first manufacturer of commercially prepared intravenous solutions, leading the way to future developments in flexible, non-PVC, closed system IV solutions such as premixed drugs that reduce the opportunity for medication error.
- Baxter was the first to introduce recombinant products for haemophilia and the first third generation FVIII. Generation three recombinant factors are free from the use of blood components at all stages of manufacture, virtually eliminating any potential risk of transmission of human blood-borne pathogens.
- Baxter is the first company in the UK to offer the new therapy of Assisted APD enabling people with established renal failure to receive the Renal Replacement Therapy of their choice in their own home, even though they may not be able to perform dialysis on their own

Baxter works in partnership with healthcare providers and policy makers to develop and support patient safety initiatives.
To support the launch of the recently released NPSA Safety Alert 20 – Promoting safer use of injectable medicines. Baxter has developed a portfolio of training aids and launched an Educational Programme to support hospitals in the implementation of the alerts. The Baxter sponsored Educational Programme developed and organised by an NHS Working Group consisting of senior Pharmacists, Nurses and Clinicians is aimed at anyone who will be involved in implementation of the alert.
Baxter Healthcare, following the recent NPSA Alert seminars, is providing the attached presentations from the Patient Safety Workshops held in June as a resource for Healthcare Professionals. The content is entirely the opinion of the author of each presentation, and does not represent the opinion of Baxter Healthcare or its employees.

| Purchasing for Safety Project |
|
 |
|
|
 |
With patient safety a key focus of Baxter and high on the political agenda, discussions involving Lord Warner, PASA and Baxter’s Healthcare resulted in a Ministerial submission, and subsequent Department of Health funding being made available for the implementation of pilot sites within the NHS to test ‘Purchasing for Safety’ benefits in particular focussing on the area of injectable medicines and devices. This project looks at more effective implementation of existing safety and procurement guidelines, thereby providing trusts with the ability to take a more ‘systems based approach’ to purchasing, particularly in ‘high-risk’ areas, such as drug delivery and specialist therapies. Data collection will be completed in 2007 and a final report in 2008
To further support the ‘Purchasing for Safety’ project, Baxter has invested significant funds to provide clinical, cost effectiveness data and evidence in areas such as medical device standardisation and risk reduction in the preparation of IV therapy.
